NATIONSTAR Leads National Key R&D Program: Key Special Project on "New Displays and Strategic Electronic Materials"

Recently, the High-Tech Research and Development Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology released the list of proposed projects for the 2021 public guideline under the national key R&D program’s key special project of "New Displays and Strategic Electronic Materials". The project titled Research on Key Technologies for High-Brightness and High-Contrast Full-Color Micro-LED Displays, led by NATIONSTAR and jointly applied by nine institutions including Xiamen Changelight Co., Ltd., BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd., Institute of Semiconductors of Guangdong Academy of Sciences, and South China University of Technology, has been successfully approved.

Accelerating Research on Core Key Micro-LED Technologies

The application for the key special project of "New Displays and Strategic Electronic Materials" is oriented toward national industrial security and major project construction needs. It aims to break through core key applied technologies in the new display industry, streamline the innovation chain, and overcome common critical technologies in the preparation and application of strategic electronic materials. It also strives to enhance China’s independent controllability of core electronic materials and components in the fields of information, energy, transportation, and high-end equipment manufacturing.

This approved project marks the first national key R&D program project led and obtained by NATIONSTAR since the launch of the 14th Five-Year Plan. Focusing on the development of Micro-LED display technology, the project targets core key materials and critical packaging technologies for Micro-LED displays, and will ultimately develop high-performance full-color Micro-LED display screens. It will help fill domestic technical gaps in the ultra-high-definition field, enable innovative technological achievements to benefit the public, and guide the healthy, rapid and high-quality development of the ultra-high-definition display industry.

Striving to Be a Pioneer in the Ultra-High-Definition Display Sector

In recent years, ultra-high-definition display has become a strategically important industry prioritized by the country. Policies including the Outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan and the Ultra-High-Definition Video Industry Development Action Plan (2019–2022) have been issued to vigorously drive the development of the industry.

As a leading enterprise in the LED packaging industry, NATIONSTAR has long been at the forefront of the ultra-high-definition display field. As early as 2015, the company began to deploy Mini-LED and Micro-LED technologies. In 2018, NATIONSTAR established China’s first Micro & Mini LED Research Center, gathering innovative strengths from enterprises, universities and research institutes to reserve forward-looking technologies and lay a solid technical foundation for the development of ultra-high-definition displays. In 2020, NATIONSTAR launched its first Micro-LED product nStar I, a 2.7-inch transparent full-color Micro-LED display module, realizing red, green and blue single-color transfer bonding and lighting above 250 PPI, further advancing the development of ultra-high-definition micro-displays. This year, NATIONSTAR has achieved new breakthroughs in high-resolution full-color Micro-LED displays by successfully developing high-consistency pixelated quantum dot color conversion film preparation technology. This effectively solves major technical pain points such as low yield and low luminous efficiency of Micro-LED red chips, as well as difficulties in mass transfer, injecting new momentum into the industrialization of Micro-LED. To better protect innovative achievements, NATIONSTAR has continuously strengthened intellectual property protection. Up to now, the company has filed 30 relevant patents in the Micro-LED field including 3 PCT patents, among which there are 24 invention patents and 6 utility model patents.

The company has achieved key breakthroughs in quantum dot color conversion film technology this year.

Moving forward, NATIONSTAR will continue to fully implement the innovation-driven development strategy, actively guide and promote the progress of China’s ultra-high-definition display and supporting industries, and strive to realize leapfrog development in the domestic production of Micro-LED. It will inject strong impetus into Guangdong Rising Group’s endeavor to join the Global Fortune 500 and make greater contributions to the development of China’s national ultra-high-definition display industry.
